If you’ve ever been deep in the backcountry, you know that the weather doesn't change all at once. Before the storm hits, there are signs: the wind shifts, the birds go quiet, and the pressure in the air drops. If you know how to read the terrain, you can adjust your route before the first drop of rain falls.
Our bodies work the same way.
I spent my 20s training my brain to see what most people miss. As a CPA, I was taught to look past the surface and find the patterns hidden in the noise. I was a "Systems Expert," obsessed with how the pieces fit together to create a functional whole. Today, I don’t use that skill for spreadsheets; I use it to listen to the whispers of your physiology.
Before we hit total burnout or a health crisis, our bodies send out these "whispers." But often, we’ve been taught to ignore them. We go to the doctor, we’re told our bloodwork is "normal," and we go back to carrying our heavy packs, wondering why we feel so exhausted.
As a CHNC™, I’ve learned that "normal" on a lab report just means you aren't currently in a medical emergency. While clinical labs are a vital part of your health story, your symptoms often act as earlier trail markers. They give us clues that your system is under stress long before that stress reaches a level that shows up as a clinical "red flag" on a blood test.
By listening to these patterns early, we can adjust your route and replenish your reserves before the deficit becomes a crisis.
Here are three patterns I look for when I’m helping clients "read the terrain" of their own wellness:
1. The "Wired but Tired" Evening
The Pattern:
You are exhausted all day, but as soon as the house goes quiet and your head hits the pillow, your brain lights up like a switch. You’re physically spent, but mentally "calculating." What the terrain is telling you: This is often a sign that your cortisol rhythm is out of alignment. Your body is "borrowing" energy from your evening recovery window just to get you through the day.
The Trailblazer Tip:
Try a "sunlight anchor." Spend 5 minutes outside in the morning light to help reset your internal clock. It’s a small, technical shift that tells your body when to be "on" and when to prepare for deep recovery.
2. The Afternoon "Fog"
The Pattern:
It’s 3:00 PM. You have that "too many tabs open" feeling in your brain—you’re looking at your screen, but nothing is clicking. You reach for caffeine or sugar just to bridge the gap to dinner. What the terrain is telling you: This is usually a blood sugar "dip" caused by a breakfast or lunch that didn't match the weight of your daily pack. Your brain is literally short on fuel.
The Trailblazer Tip:
Audit your lunch for protein and fiber. If your lunch is too light for your output, your brain will pay the price three hours later.
3. The Digestive "Noise"
The Pattern:
You start the day feeling fine, but by late afternoon, your clothes feel tight and your digestion feels loud. It’s a low-level discomfort that follows you home. What the terrain is telling you: This is a signal that your system is struggling to process the fuel you’re giving it—often due to being stuck in "fight or flight" mode where digestion takes a backseat to survival.
The Trailblazer Tip:
Practice "Rest and Digest." Even taking three deep, intentional breaths before your first bite can shift your nervous system out of "mountain-climbing mode" and into a state where it can actually absorb its fuel.
The Freedom of Alignment
When we clear the fog and quiet the digestive noise, we aren't just "fixing a problem." We are opening up the capacity to be present for the summit—whether that’s a mountain ridge, a high-stakes meeting or keeping your cool when dealing with teenage attitudes.
When your nutritional foundation is solid, you stop "step-counting" through your day. You stop worrying if you have "enough" in the tank. You become like that kid on the glacier—free to explore, to laugh, and to push your limits because you know your body is prepared for the climb.
If you recognize yourself in one of these three patterns, you don't have to navigate it alone. Reach out for a 30-minute Sampler load-audit to see where your own "whispers" are leading us.
